A database is an instance of a backend, i.e. of a storage type;
think of a variable declaration:
    int i;
where int, the type, is the backend, and i, the name,
is the database.
Configuration directives appearing after a
    database <type>
directive refer only to that instance of that backend type.
See What is a backend? and slapd.conf(5) for details.
